I got my big DMM a little before they started releasing all of the variants and I’m glad because I can’t keep up with all the versions.įor what it’s worth, my friend said the big-box reissue won “hands down.” The subtle differences added up for him so there’s no reason to feel like you “fell” for anything. They also have the DMM-TT series with tap tempo, longer delay time, and I believe an effects loop, and they have the Deluxe Memory Boy which has longer delay times, tap tempo, and an effects loop but uses newer, cheaper, darker delay chips. This is the straight-up XO DMM, so it doesn’t have the effects loop. Don’t pay extra for a vintage model unless you really want the vintage model.ĮHX’s delay strategy is confusing haha. ![]() ![]() The 70s guy cut the most top end and distorted early but it was generally in the same ballpark. Aside from the bleed, the vintage bypass was good because there was no volume boost or cut between the bypass and active modes, but after years of dialing in my reissue’s preamp to match the bypassed signal, that’s not a huge advantage. It’s less noticeable on the chorus setting but the vibrato was quite slow. I didn’t notice it much through an amp but I was playing into headphones the other day and it was noticeable. ![]() The preamp is always in the chain, and the delay signal bled through. The 70s guy, unsurprisingly, had the worst bypass, the lowest output, and the least headroom. It still hit the same extremes at the end of the sweep but it was more forgiving when you were trying to dial in more sensible settings. In general, you had to turn the knobs further than on the big boxes - if I set my reissue mod depth at 25%, a comparable sound on the XO was around 40%. The knobs seem a bit less fiddly and seem to operate on a wider range - on my reissue, you need to be really ginger with the Feedback knob whereas the XO was easy to dial to that “just about to run away” zone. The XO has the most headroom and highest output. We put them side by side and here’s what happened: I have a 70s DMM on loan from my uncle and a 2000s reissue that I bought new in 2008ish. ![]()
